    afternoon out with michelle.

Our teammates, Richey and Keli, have a nanny with them from the U.S. for two months.  After they began making plans for her to come, I found out that I know her!  Michelle’s parents are in the church in Florida my dad pastored when I was in middle school.  So my brothers and I grew up for a few years with Michelle and her siblings. Who would have thought, years later, Michelle and I would meet up again here on the other side of the world!  We spent a fun afternoon out in the city last week, getting pedicures, sipping iced coffee/fruit drinks, and exploring a book shop. early-morning “climb.”

We have begun experimenting with a week-day-off for David.  We’re learning that weekends are often the best time for meetings, making contacts for the Business Development Center, and Sundays are busy with ministry.  And, while we love the growing busyness, we’re in need of a Family Rest Day. guys’ morning out.

Yesterday morning, David had the idea that we split up, girls and guys, for a morning of fun. He and Judah headed up the street first thing for bagels and cream cheese.  We’ve only found one place that makes bagels here, and they aren’t very good, but Judah doesn’t seem to mind.  He’s a true Gentino in his obsession with bagels. Yum.  Gluten. Next it was to Cubbon Park to climb and roam.  It’s a mile’s walk, and David said Judah kept asking, “Can we just take an auto?” Judah’s happy place And a stop at the aquarium on the way home . . . another of Judah’s happy places.…

    saturday morning.

We went to the fancy mall on Saturday morning for pastries (well, for three of us) and cappuccino at Cafe Noir, then David and Judah visited the Apple store while I took Amie for a haircut.  Sorry, no pics of the haircut (I was too busy wrestling my two-year-old), but it turned out super cute.

    nine days in.

For all my talk of city-living, it turns out I’m still a girl from the suburbs.  I arrived, for better or for worse, in my new neighborhood last Wednesday evening in a state of shock. Twenty-five minutes away, and it is a different world here, truly. It turns out that the thread of my confidence in living in South Asia was very tenuous indeed.  Uproot me from my familiar little neighborhood, from Skyline apartments, and I am lost. I spent the first couple of days holed up in our apartment, kids bouncing off the walls, paralyzed by intimidation. It is loud here.  It is crowded.  Yes, all of South Asia…
