    master bedroom 2019.

Two years ago today we were neck-deep in our master bedroom addition. We were preparing for a church New Member’s class and I was shedding tears because there was a giant hole in our living room wall, our front yard was a mud pit, and there was a good possibility that the roofers would not be finished in time for us to welcome 25 people into our home. Well, guess what. We survived that season and that New Member’s class. I’ve learned so much since then. I’ve learned that a brand new toilet and crisp white subway tile still get dirty in the regular disgusting ways that any bathroom gets…

the master bedroom is finished and reflections on our house addition.

I’m very, very thankful to report that our master bedroom is finished! The addition itself was completed a year ago in May. Actually we moved in on our 13th anniversary! We furnished our room with the bare essentials and called it a day. I was itching to have it feel finished but also completely exhausted and experiencing major decision fatigue from the entire project. We needed to just be in our new space and rest for awhile. Here’s a little trip down memory lane: February, 2017:         March, 2017:   April, 2017:               May, 2017:     End of May,…

    august.

Can you believe it is already September? In 5 days my oldest child will be double-digits. I glanced back over my blog entries … posts were kind of patchy this summer, I know. I really struggle with blogs and the internet and social media in general. I think they have wonderful benefits. But they’re also one-dimensional. The things that are most photo-graphable are the fun, exciting things. Not the messes. The tempers. The two-hour period before dinner when I want to pull my hair out. The internet is fun, but it’s not real life. It’s a snapshot. I think we’re at our best when we can stop and realize this,…

    living room update.

I’ve taken a couple of blissful months off thinking about house projects; no scouring of Pinterest or spontaneous trips to Home Goods. It’s a very restful feeling to find myself not even really caring that things still aren’t completely finished. And it’s true: they aren’t. Our builder still needs to come wrap up a few items, and we’re going to have all the windows in our house replaced. And we still haven’t touched up the paint in our bedroom or put the final coat on the baseboards. But Scott’s working a job now that he said is over two times the size of our bedroom addition, so we’re squeezed into…

    here we go again!

It’s been two weeks since we moved into our room, which has felt like an eternity to Amie, who’s been waiting and waiting for her bedroom to be finished. We temporarily moved her into the space, and then right back out again yesterday to make way for our building crew. It was actually great to see the guys again! Amie had made them friendship bracelets and passed them around, and was anxious to show them how much her chickens have grown. Yesterday’s project was to remove the crown molding from the bedroom, tear out that old sealed exterior door, and seal up the space. We talked about putting a window…

    the condition: may 2017.

Hi friends, our bags are packed and David and I hit the road at 7:00 am for our backpacking overnight. All the hard work of prepping is finished, and now we’re just excited to be getting away. We promise to tell you all about our trip. In the meantime, here are some photos of our addition progress! Above is a little reminder of our “before” living room. Here’s what that corner looks like today: We not only got a doorway, we got a nice wide doorway and a sunlit hall nook. I thought I’d miss our brown chair reading corner, but we’re so charmed by that light-filled hall that we…

    sunday gratitude.

    1. A member of our building crew brought me this lovely house-warming plant 2. As David says, the overpowering smell of wood floor stain and polyurethane is “the smell of progress.” 3. The last coat was applied this morning! The final inspection happened on Friday. 4. Re-watching two favorite movies: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and The Hundred-Foot Journey 5. I haven’t seen a single slug in our yard since we got the chickens 6. The colorful India-made rug I found for our new bedroom 7. Judah and Amie got invited to a friend’s Harry Potter birthday party and both are overjoyed 8. This morning David preached a sermon that…

    i’m still here!

Hi friends! I’ve been pretty terrible at keeping up with the blog lately, and I feel bad about it. Not that I expect you to be sitting by your computer waiting for a post. It’s so odd, really. For years I wanted to experience a home renovation so that I could take pictures and blog about the process, but I neglected to factor in one very important thing: that during the renovation I may have zero — and I mean zero — energy for blogging or really anything beyond laying on the sofa with glazed eyes and watching Netflix every night. Ah well. I’m sure some of you could’ve told…

    the home stretch.

I’m long overdue for a house update. Our house addition started February 13, which means we’re entering our eighth week. Can you believe it? People told me the construction process would feel like an eternity, but February and March were such extremely busy months for us, that it’s flown by. All except the weekend the roof was being replaced. That felt like an eternity for sure. If you’re wondering why, imagine the sound of something like large rodents scurrying and stomping overhead, interspersed with lots of pounding (on your very skull) and every so often, what sounds like bodies hitting the roof. That kind of did a number on our…

    lately

Hi friends! I thought I’d do a quick photo update post of what we’ve been up to the last couple of weeks. If you can believe it, our church just had our first official church-wide picnic a couple weeks ago! It was a lovely, 70-degree Sunday afternoon and a great time was had by all. The consensus was: Let’s do this more often! And, now, onto the house update . . . Weeks 4 and 5 have been all about framing. Yesterday the heating/air guys came, as well as the electrician. We asked our contractor if our friend Ben could do the electrical work, and it’s fun having him apart…
