pet update (by amie).

It’s been the best having a dog around.

It has taken most of my twelve and a half years of life to persuade my parents to get a dog.  I almost lost hope when we let our last foster dog, Mika, go. I figured that I could wait until I owned my own home and have lots of dogs.

All that changed when we met Kira. It was truly love at first sight.

One of the ways I knew Kira was the dog for us is that when we met I warmed up to her immediately. Buddy and Mika took time to warm up to. It could’ve been because they were my first dogs I had lived with. It has just been a joy to be with Kira from day one.

A week ago I got a forty-eight hour virus and was upset because it was spring break and I was wasting my time on the couch. Though it was frustrating to be sick, Kira made me feel better. Whenever Dad got up to let her out and get ready for work, she would hop up on the couch with me and fall asleep.

Kira is growing rapidly! We soon had to order another crate for her. I’d say she loves it:

Mom and I took her to her first vet appointment a few days ago. Before that, we’d been trying to get her used to the car by driving around the neighborhood and giving her treats to show her that it was positive place. She did really well at the vet and now loves the car! Yesterday we picked up a friend and when she saw Mom and I jump into the car, Kira ran in after us and plopped herself on the passenger seat. So she accompanied us on the drive.

Mom takes a nap on the couch everyday around 1:00. Kira sleeps with her. Now at 1:00 everyday, Kira jumps on the couch ready to take her nap with Mom! It’s so cute.

We have so many “ups” with Kira, it’s hard to complain about the “downs”. But she loves to bite. I know she is a puppy and puppies bite, but it’s super annoying. Whenever she is hyper and biting we grab our bull whip. I don’t know why we have a bull whip but our grandpa found it and gave it to us. We do not whip her or hurt her with it. We would never do that. We drag it around the yard and she runs and runs after it. It’s hilarious!

My Dad is the only one who can say “no” really loudly and Kira will stop biting. I guess it’s because he is the alpha. Well now he isn’t the only alpha. “The pig” is too. It’s the ugliest pig ever, but it makes a super weird sound when you squeak it. It literally sounds like a dying cow. Kira is terrified of it. We were going to give it to her as a toy, but instead we use it as a punishment pig. When she is biting and I touch it — not even squeak it — she stops and slinks away!

Over all I think Kira is the best dog ever! Whenever I’m sad or stressed she makes me feel so much better. I adore her.

Albus Dumbledore is doing great! He is huge. He’s the only one of all my pets that doesn’t bite, so I call him “the golden child”. I can go about my day and he loves to stay on my shoulder. Sometimes I sit in the sun and he loves to be there with me. He still isn’t two feet yet long, but I think he’s over one foot.

I always like to have a reptile with my furry pets. I’ve had so many snakes, but personally I love bearded dragons more! I mean how can you say no to that face???

I love guinea pigs. There is just something about their cute faces and how they like to cuddle. Except Oscar. He doesn’t love to cuddle as much, and I’m fine with that! He loves to run around the floor and always puts a smile on my face. We’re training Kira not to chase him when I let him roam on the floor. It works when she isn’t in a playful mood. Oscar loves her and loves to nibble on her nose. He doesn’t understand that if he irritates her… well… let’s just say it wouldn’t end well.

Max is super cuddly. He is also chubby! Whenever I take him out of his cage he yawns and gets comfortable and sleeps. He’s my baby.

A few months ago, all six of our chickens got killed by a possum or raccoon. It was sad. Not this spring but next we want to get more! We’ll have to train Kira to like them though. “Like” as in not eat them.

I love all my pets so much. They are always my go-to for comfort.
