    girl date.

Amie and I began our morning with egg burritos at home, followed by playing with new care package toys. Thanks to Owen and Oliver, and to Martha, for fun new toys! “Bullseye is my best friend!” Next, we walked to Cafe Coffee Day for a mid-morning snack. Big girl While we waited for our treats, I taught Amie how to take pictures. Not bad Ams! Hmm.  I like this interpretation. Happy with her “hot chocolate latte” She kept asking me to take pictures of her milk mustache. 🙂  Speaking of which, if you see lots of pics of Amie on the blog these days, it’s because she loves having her…

    just another walk home.

After playing at the park, the six of us walked the half-mile to John and Alison’s flat for lunch. Watch out for that barbed wire, Ams Signs here are the best.  Doesn’t this sound so pleasant?  I want to alight. Gotta look out for these random holes in the sidewalk And these There are also lots and lots of road projects.  Do you like that safety tape?  And, if you think that traffic is slowing down for a woman with three small children, you are wrong. Caleb expertly bypasses the random toilet lying on the sidewalk Aaaand, here’s another one A sweet photo of my friend, Alison.  Wait–something isn’t quite…

    the park.

There is a neighborhood park smack in between John and Alison’s place and ours, so we met up to check it out this morning. Here is an example of what I love about South Asia: Judah and Amie and I walked to the park, which is maybe a 15-minute walk.  I hadn’t been before, so I asked directions a couple times, one from an auto rickshaw driver.  He said “I’ll drive you,” but I said sheepishly that I didn’t have cash.  The kids and I walked on, but the auto driver caught up with us and said “Get in.”  He took us right to the entrance. So yes, there are…

    out with daddy.

Our A-block elevator Racing to the gates! Amelie on the run In case you are wondering, David confirmed that Judah actually did touch that mattress. Can anyone guess what the sign at the top of this photo is for? Thankfully he didn’t tell me whether they touched these … Waiting for traffic to pass Typical neighborhood shops Walking home from work Home sweet home. It feels strange to us, but it is typical to have guards for houses and apartments here.  I do have to say it makes me feel safer when David’s traveling. On the other side of this glorious greenery is my friend Deepakshi’s flat.  I loved her…

    awakening.

This past month I’ve lived in a dream.  I’ve holed up in our little flat, in the shrunken world of our walled-up apartment complex, my body weak with sickness.  I’ve cringed back from noise and dirt and people and . . . from South Asia.  I’m a stranger in a strange land — my sickness every day reminding me of its strangeness — and the knowledge has been more than I can bear. So for this whole month I hid away, both because I needed to and because I wanted to.  So many times I prayed I’d go to sleep and wake back up at home in America, where everything…
