front yard garden tour.
Yes, we are the neighbors with a vegetable garden in our front yard.
It may be a little un-orthodox here in the south, but people generally seem intrigued, and sometimes downright inspired. It’s definitely a conversation starter.
We still have garden beds in the back with lettuce, radishes and onions currently growing, but they’ll need to go away for the kitchen/back porch renovation, so David’s gradually migrating to the front. Plus we’re thinking of making the back yard more of a place for parties and kids to run free and play (i.e. not consider our raised beds sandboxes), and using this front space for the garden.
He started everything from seed this year except the herbs, and tried to stagger planting so that we don’t have three dozen radishes all at once. I promised that once I have a bigger kitchen, I’ll learn how to can vegetables.
We were disappointed with our pepper and squash crops last summer, and so composted more generously this year. Though we have our own compost system in the backyard, we also started going in with our neighbor Chris to buy a truckload of zoo compost once a year, which is pretty awesome.
The straw is used as mulch to protect the roots from sun and keep in water.
Here’s a little spring garden tour:
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Lettuce in front, potatoes in back
Cucumbers
This bed was a “meadow” all winter, with a cover crop that restores the soil. Now it’s a tomato bed.
Carrots and turnips
Mint
Rosemary, parsley, oregano
Squash and zucchini
Cilantro, basil, peppers

Future home of an actual, legit driveway.
A cute girl eating strawberries not from our garden. But they are local!
