saturn v.
Last month, David, Judah, and I watched the movie The Martian, which we enjoyed very much. Afterward, our friend Nick loaned Judah his amazing LEGO set, the Apollo Saturn V, to take apart and rebuild. Thankfully, David and Judah waited until I took the three younger kids to a birthday party, or I would’ve been a little nervous about one of those pieces getting lost. The set has over 1,900 pieces, and the guys had it taken apart and rebuilt it in about 5 hours!

he says.
Letter Noah dictated to our friend John: Santa Claus is coming to your chimney, only if you have a chimney. And you have to go to sleep, and you have to put your pillow on your face. And let Santa Claus come in and try to go to sleep! And when it’s Christmas time, the presents will be in your room! And don’t forget to make cookies for him. Make good, yummy cookies for him! Put a cup of milk there so he can drink it. Well, don’t forget you need it to be good and fresh! Santa Claus will have a lot of candy, presents, and toys. Well, you…

august.
Hi there! So, I’ve had a bookshelf post in the works for a couple of weeks now, but the truth is, between school and trip prep, my brain is mush. I love writing Bookshelf posts, but there’s a good change this one will never, ever be finished. So how about this: Can I tell you about our month in photos, and then pretty please, just give you a list of books I read at the end? It feels like a cop-out. But it’s better than nothing, right? Despite the craziness of starting school and planning a long road trip, and just normal life with a family of six, August has…

amelie is 9!
Remember this cute little baby? Well, we blinked and she is nine years old. I decided to tell you about her name today, since we get asked about it often. I also know that some of you who read our blog and then meet us in real life ask, “So how do you pronounce your daughter’s name?” David and I were not the best at choosing baby names, mostly because I never really got a say. Actually, when I met David in college — before we ever started dating — he told me if he had a son, his name would be Judah Stephen (and why, you ask, was a…

Archery What was a rule your counselors gave you? They didn’t exactly give us a lot of rules. That’s what made it fun. Did you get to sleep in the treehouse this year? Yes. It was more like a tree fort with a gigantic platform with a spiral staircase leading up. I liked it. What was different about this year? Majors were in the morning, but electives came first. How did you like having…

this week.
We’ve spent a lovely, very quiet week without our two big kids. Gabe and Noah went to half-day CIU soccer camp, and had a great time. It gave me some much-needed quiet mornings to do things like run errands, deep clean the refrigerator, take my mom out for a birthday breakfast, and order school curriculum. I was astonished by how productive I can be when I’m all alone. David and I got a date night too. I spent the afternoons with our two boys which felt surreal. The biggest thing I noticed is that I just plain enjoyed each of them more, without the constant clamor for mom’s attention from…

camp drop off 2018.
Can you believe it’s been a whole year since we sent our oldest away to camp for the first time!? Boy, was that emotional for me. This summer our nearly-9-year-old wanted to join in the fun. It’s funny how things go with kids. They get to have the same experiences progressively younger, don’t they? So Amelie is a whole year younger than when Judah was for his first time. He forged the way and showed us all how wonderful it is and made her want to go. Don’t we love our oldest “experiment kids”!? I’m speaking as an oldest experiment kid, of course. This year we took along some good…

gabe’s jedi vs. ninja birthday party.
Thanks to my mom for the awesome and delicious Ninjago cake! me to David: Wow, those pool noodle nunchucks are great. Did you find the idea on Pinterest? David: Babe. Are you kidding!? Every man has thought up a plan to make nunchucks, just in case the need arises.
