    making room.

After a year and a half of working hard on our house and yard, we agreed to take 2015 off of major projects. And we did! Well, 2016 couldn’t even begin before David was back to work. Our tree guy and his crew drove a trailer into our yard at 8:30 New Year’s Eve morning, so we celebrated Noah’s third birthday to the tune of saws and crashes and lots of cigarette smoke. The boys were captivated. Then David and I may or may not have fled left town overnight for a wedding, while his parents stayed with our kids and oversaw the rest of the tree process. Thanks, Steve…

    morning fire pit.

Morning fire pits are a tradition we developed last fall and winter, and we introduced Gabe and Noah to it on Saturday. I remember having a fire pit one evening the first weekend we adopted them, back in April (yes, we like to make fire pit season stretch as long as possible), and it was nothing short of terrifying. I was every moment afraid they’d stumble into the fire, touch the hot stone surface, throw random objects into the flames. What were we even thinking? Fast forward six months, and we spent a much more relaxing hour together around the fire. We all slept in ’til 7:30 (and Judah until…

    2015: the kids’ bedrooms.

I want to show you photos of the kids’ bedrooms, but before I do, here’s a look into the world’s smallest bathroom: I realize it’s not the smallest ever, but it may be pretty close. Especially when six people are sharing it. When we bought our house, there was an old pedestal sink, which David recently replaced with this cute little vanity. Sharing a bathroom is not easy. But you know what, it’s fine. It really is. I’ve decided the best way to tackle the issue is a sense of humor. And so, when there are two kids in the tub, one on the potty, one parent wiping the child…

    2015: kitchen and dining room.

Our kitchen is as tiny as it looks, but it’s full of light, and I decided that even with a kitchen twice its size, Gabe and Noah would still be standing as close to my legs as humanly possible when I cook so that I trip over them every time I try to take a step. Even so. We hope to make 2016 The Year of the Kitchen Remodel. We had a designer come up with plans to take out a couple walls and give us a bigger kitchen and dining room without having to do an addition, and we loved her ideas. We’ll get new cabinets and counters, backsplash…

    2015: the master bedroom.

I use the phrase “master bedroom” loosely because it doesn’t have an attached bathroom, and in fact wasn’t even considered a true bedroom when we purchased the house because it didn’t have a closet. The room has an outside access door (which is sealed shut) and a funky ceiling, so we’ve decided it was originally a porch or sunroom that was closed in. You may remember that for the first year this room was our school/catch-all room, and last summer we gave it a makeover. It’s still not quite finished, and is one of those examples of me setting aside a space for a season. It’s not perfect yet —…

2015: the living room and a word about decorating.

We’ve officially been in our house two years, and each year I want to do a little house tour to document how it looks right here and now, and also to talk about our latest organizing streak. For some reason getting myself together to do this simple thing has felt like a monumental task, so I’m cheating by taking cell phone photos instead of using my nice camera, and spreading it out a bit (if nothing else because it’s impossible to keep more than one room in the house looking neat and child-free at a time). Why do it at all?, you ask? Because it’s fun! Because I love peeking…

    fitting in our house.

So now we have four kids. There are six of us, living in a 1,475 square foot house with three bedrooms, tiny closets, and one bathroom. A question we get asked these days is, “Are you guys going to move?” In fact, the week we adopted Gabe and Noah, our realtor (who’s also our friend) sent us a “Congrats!” email along with a list of 10 houses to look at. She wasn’t totally off-base; she knows that we’ve been casually looking for a bigger house ever since we started the adoption process last spring. And by “casually” I mean that we have seen pretty much every house on Zillow within…

    wednesday.

If we follow each other on Instagram, know that I love you, but I’ve decided to take another break. I have terrible self-discipline when it comes to social media, and I hate that I compulsively check my phone when I should be paying attention to my people. So for the time being, I’ll just focus on updating this space. Thanks Grandpa and Mum-Mum for the blow-up pool!
