monday update.
Happy April, blog friends! There seem to be various and sundry things to update you on, so I’ll consolidate into one post and try not to be too long-winded. Last week just so happened to be our single busiest week of the semester. We knew it was coming. We prepared in advance for it. But it was still a doozy. David had not one, but two out of town trips, and I had a couple big commitments here at home. I managed to get sick smack in the middle of everything with a sort of sinus thing, probably pollen-related, which I’m still battling. But God was faithful, my mother-in-law was…

january.
Hello from sunny but cold South Carolina! This winter has been bewildering. It started back in November, and has given us lots of rain and nighttime temperatures in the low 20’s. This is not typical South Carolina weather. I got winter boots and a very soft pink beanie for Christmas and have put them to good use. January has flown by. I thought I’d jump back into blogging by telling you what we’ve been up to this month. I’m sorry to say that I have zero recent photos to include. I’ll do better in February! Riding bikes Amie got a new bike for Christmas, and Noah got one for…

august.
Hi there! So, I’ve had a bookshelf post in the works for a couple of weeks now, but the truth is, between school and trip prep, my brain is mush. I love writing Bookshelf posts, but there’s a good change this one will never, ever be finished. So how about this: Can I tell you about our month in photos, and then pretty please, just give you a list of books I read at the end? It feels like a cop-out. But it’s better than nothing, right? Despite the craziness of starting school and planning a long road trip, and just normal life with a family of six, August has…

side ventures (an ode to my husband).
David and a friend from church own several rental properties, which have been an interesting side venture over the last few years. David loves being a pastor but is also very interested in business and investing, so this is a good way for him to experiment and learn some skills. As they started buying properties, we all read the book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, which we highly recommend. I was so moved by the stories in the book, by the battle many people in our country wage daily for stable, safe places to live. I’m the kind of person who reads a book like that, feels…

five things.
Happy weekend, dear friends! I titled this post Five things on Friday, which was much catchier, but then Friday came and went and the post sat in my drafts folder (like most of my blog posts, for awhile). This will be a word-heavy, picture-less post, I apologize in advance. I’ll do my very best to make it interesting. Here are a few things we’ve been up to! 1. Starting school We started a new homeschool year on Tuesday, and it’s been lovely. We had a wonderful summer. I felt like I truly disconnected from homeschooling and got to travel and take pictures and catch up with friends and just…

this week.
We’ve spent a lovely, very quiet week without our two big kids. Gabe and Noah went to half-day CIU soccer camp, and had a great time. It gave me some much-needed quiet mornings to do things like run errands, deep clean the refrigerator, take my mom out for a birthday breakfast, and order school curriculum. I was astonished by how productive I can be when I’m all alone. David and I got a date night too. I spent the afternoons with our two boys which felt surreal. The biggest thing I noticed is that I just plain enjoyed each of them more, without the constant clamor for mom’s attention from…

strawberry picking.
We started Spring Break with a hike at Congaree, and finished with strawberry picking. We love Cottle Farms, but I haven’t had the courage to take my crew since we adopted the boys, so each spring I’ve stocked up at their roadside stands instead. I freeze extra strawberries for smoothies and maybe a margarita or two. This was the perfect year to begin our tradition again: Gabe and Noah were thrilled with every part of the experience and followed instructions like pros. Noah later told me he thought he’d…
