    training.

I mentioned earlier this spring that David decided to have the kids train for a 5K. He didn’t have a specific 5K in mind, which is probably for the best since races have been cancelled for the time being. The lap around our immediate block is a quarter of a mile, and the nice thing about it is the kids can run (little guys staying together or with an older sibling) and we feel safe not being there. We can hear them from all parts and cars drive nice and slow on these streets. Even so, after just a week or two of their running around the block, I felt…

    a time to heal.

When the quarantine started in the middle of March, I was just as bewildered as the rest of the nation. As I was helping my kids process canceled soccer games, birthday parties, and homeschool co-op activities, I can tell you for sure that I never expected to still be in quarantine nearly eight weeks later. This has been an experience unlike any other, and I have the feeling that it will leave indelible marks on many. As I mentioned several weeks ago, David and I tottered at the edge of burn-out this spring. I typically shy away from that term, because it sounds melodramatic. But if you prefer: we were…

    pip moves outside.

In my last post about Pip the squirrel, I told you about his move to the back porch. Well, he had another move just a week later. It wasn’t that he didn’t like the back porch — no, he loved it. He had no desire at all to leave it, as we learned when various people left the screen door open and he never tried to scamper outside. We learned that Pip much prefers a life of leisure.   The problem is, he became a bit too comfortable and began wreaking havoc on our lovely new porch. First it was attacking my hibiscus. Next it was pooping all over the…

    easter weekend 2020.

During this spring of the coronavirus, we take our joy where we can find it. And it turns out, there’s much joy to be had, if we’ve got eyes to see. We couldn’t spend Easter weekend celebrating Jesus’ resurrection with our church family in the usual way, but we did celebrate.   One way we looked for joy was by making a Thankful Wall. Thankfulness is contagious, just like complaining is. When we started noticing all God’s gifts to us it was hard to stop.   David had the chance to perform two wedding ceremonies for couples whose wedding plans were put on hold due to the quarantine, one Saturday…

    more about pip.

Here’s a little update about the baby squirrel David’s dad rescued five weeks ago. Prepare yourself for an overload of cuteness!     Our friend Carly dropped off her daughter’s old doll carrier for Pip. He enjoys it occasionally, when he feels like being still (which is rare these days). Actually, who mostly uses the doll carrier now is Max the guinea pig.     Pip much prefers to be free to scale whoever is closest to him, up and down, up and down. His new favorite trick is jumping. It’s my least favorite of his tricks (that and chewing on my hair). Right after I snapped the above pic…

    at our house.

Happy Saturday, friends! Like all of you, our family is learning to adjust to a new normal with COVID-19 and quarantine. It feels surreal, a bit like time is frozen in place. For the kids and me, quarantine looks a lot like normal life, just much quieter. I didn’t realize how busy we stay with seeing people, until most of it was taken away. Actually, the realizing of it has been very good for me. To be honest, David and I were nearing burn-out right before all this hit. We were hanging by a thread, trying to muster energy for a very full spring with church ministry, and had made…

    our weekend.

David. Is recovering from hernia surgery, and his dad brought over the best get well gift ever: a rescued baby squirrel. David has adopted the squirrel, who Amie named Pip, feeds him from a dropper, and the two are now inseparable.       Jules. I spent a happy couple of hours sitting on the back steps, cleaning my houseplants leaf by leaf. I’ve never done that before, but when I noticed literal cobwebs growing on a couple of them, I decided that the time had come. They all look much happier now.     Judah. Is officially taller than his Mum-Mum, who feels like it was just yesterday that…

    soccer and chicks.

Amie is playing soccer with the Downtown YMCA this spring, and Saturday was her first game. She’s never played before and has been very excited about being on her friend Caroline’s team.     It was cold and windy on Saturday! Which is funny considering that I’m typing this post on our back porch on an 80-degree afternoon.  Amie jumped in there and ran hard for the whole hour. She’s still learning the rules of the game, but did a great job.       Noah wanted to play soccer this spring too, but I needed a season to get used to the schedule and to figure out practices and…
