south asian outfits.

This post is especially for Rachel C., who’s been asking for a picture of the outfits Martha and I had made.  I am so upset I never got a photo of Martha’s because she looked awesome.  Rachel, you will have to make her try it on next time she’s home from school.

My outfit is a salwar kameez suit.  The fabric or ready made tunic, salwar (baggy pants) and dupatta (scarf) are purchased together in a matching set.  This outfit and the saree are the two traditional South Asian forms of dress here.  I wear this to more traditional churches or when we travel in rural areas, but some of my friends here wear something like this every day.

My mom’s outfit wouldn’t be considered a suit because the kurta and pants were purchased separately, and it would fit in any context.  It really honors South Asians, especially the older generations, when we Western women are willing to dress like them.

Here’s a view from the back.  I prefer not to wear the scarf because the necklines are so pretty and because you can imagine how cumbersome it gets with two clingy preschoolers.  If you’re wondering why I haven’t gotten a saree yet, it’s for the same reason. I have enough trouble with Western skirts, much less navigating one huge piece of cloth wrapped around my body.  Maybe when my kids are older.

I have been meaning to tell you that I wore my kurta with leggings around campus this past week and everyone loved it. We are bringing this trend to the Americas!

Thanks! I just caught up with your blog tonight. I appreciate the photos. The suits are beautiful, but I certainly understand why you don’t wear them all the time. Not as comfortable as a t-shirt and jeans….
Love the photos at various sights. I know you loved spending tine with your mother. I love spending time with my daughter, too. Loved the Ronald McDonald pic. Very American. The ice cream looked delicious. Wonder if it tastes the same as the McD in Lexington.
Praying that God gives you renewed strength daily.
Sorry it has been so long to comment.
