    room refresh (by amie).

Last year I began to dream of repainting my room. It already needed a fresh coat of paint and so I decided to go headed and paint it a different color than light gray. One day Mom and I were looking through Homebody, by Joanna Gaines, for inspiration for our house. We saw this adorable home with rooms painted a dark navy. I was instantly obsessed, and after much thought I decided it could look amazing in my room, especially with all my natural light. So I was ready to paint! Little did I know it would take forever to actually get started on this big project. Dad pronounced that…

    plant exchange (by amie).

Today Mom and I went to a plant exchange at church that our friend Allie organized. It was so fun. I very much enjoy hanging around with people who love plants. It was a perfect time to share clippings we’ve started, and purge plants and pots we don’t want, and also exchange for different types. The plant ball in the picture bellow is a fun craft you can do with your plant clippings! Isn’t it cute?   There were lots of plants. My Mom and I said we wanted to get rid of plants and only bring a few home. Yeah, we definitely brought more then a few home!  …

    interior door project, part one.

We haven’t had a house project in a good long while. But because it’s so nice out these days, last weekend David decided to tackle one that’s been needed for the 9 1/2 years we’ve owned this house: the interior doors. To explain why it’s needed, I give you Exhibit A:     In the boys’ wing of the house (“wing” makes it sound grander than it is; in truth it’s a very tiny hallway), we have six doors total: a bathroom, two bedrooms, three closets. And they all look like this. I think you can figure out why — someone thought it was a good idea to slap latex…

    bedroom update (by amie).

Hello! This is my bedroom update. Over the summer I’ve been changing my room from a tween room to a teen room. I want it to be a cozy place for me to have alone time, and also a fun place to have friends over and chill.   I call myself a plant nerd and you can tell by these pictures. I have 28 houseplants in my room! Kinda crazy. I bought two strands of twinkle lights to hang in my room, I like their cozy vibe. I still have 3 roommates (pets) with me: Max and Oscar, my guinea pigs, and Albus, my bearded dragon! Yesterday morning I woke…

    front yard.

Three of the six of us have Covid, so we’re hanging out at home these days, alternating between laying around lethargically and puttering in the house and yard. Today I spruced up the front porch with a good bit of help from Amie. Basically all it consisted of was moving plants and other decorative items from different spots in the house out to the porch. It’s called “shopping our house,” and if it weren’t for the resulting barren state of other areas of our home, it would work perfectly.     David was feeling depressed about the front yard garden this winter and threatened to do away with it completely.…

    living room, summer 2021.

One of our favorite changes we’ve made to this house is adding the living room bookshelf a year ago. It still makes us so happy. People ask me if it’s a pain to access the books, and the answer is: not at all! I can easily climb on the sofa arm or pull in a chair to reach books. Having all the floor space free for furniture is a much better use of the space for us. The bookshelf was my Mother’s Day gift from David last year. This year, he told me I could order a new front door. This is something I’ve thought about for awhile, and after…

amelie is 11 and a bedroom refresh.

Our girl turned 11 years old this summer! It seems like just yesterday she looked like this:     Several of her friends have gotten loft beds in the past year or two, so that’s what Amie wanted for her birthday. Judah saw the plans we made for her room, and decided he wanted the same thing, so we spent July giving them each a little bedroom refresh. We have small bedrooms in the original part our house, and very small closets, so we’re always looking for ways to maximize space and storage. We’ve also found that our big kids really need their own desks for their school work that…

bookshelves & the evolution of our living room.

Well the living room is officially finished. The most finished it’s been in 7 years. But before I show you, let’s take a little trip down memory lane, shall we?   2013 We bought our house in July 2013. We bought it as a house we liked, not loved. It was one we could afford. And it had good bones. We bought it with a vision of growing it into a house that suited our family exactly. When we first saw the far wall of our long, spacious living room, we thought, That’s a great spot for built-in bookcases! They were fresh on our mind, because we had built-ins in…

    a little back porch update.

Hi there friends! After reclaiming our porch from Pip the squirrel (who’s still happily living in our backyard), and getting to add a couple of fun touches for my Mother’s Day gifts, I decided to take some pictures. David and I realized the one of our favorite features of having a blog is documenting the way our house evolves over the years. If I waited for each room to feel completely finished before posting pictures, we wouldn’t have any! So here’s our porch at the end of spring, 2020.     Several of you have asked about our furniture. It’s the IKEA SOLLERON series, here’s the link to the loveseat,…

    at our house.

Happy Saturday, friends! Like all of you, our family is learning to adjust to a new normal with COVID-19 and quarantine. It feels surreal, a bit like time is frozen in place. For the kids and me, quarantine looks a lot like normal life, just much quieter. I didn’t realize how busy we stay with seeing people, until most of it was taken away. Actually, the realizing of it has been very good for me. To be honest, David and I were nearing burn-out right before all this hit. We were hanging by a thread, trying to muster energy for a very full spring with church ministry, and had made…
